My Home Birth

Ok, so I have decided to tell my homebirth story.
Jen...no worries...I know you are reading this...I won't go into too much detail!
I wish I had more pictures of the event, but right after
I printed those pictures off to scrapbook them,
my computer program ate them.
So, those of you who want to see pictures, you'll have to
come over and look at my scrapbook with me :)
Anyways...first off...to answer the question, WHY?
Well...when James and I first got married,
we didn't bother with stupid ole insurance
because we thought we were young and healthy and could live forever...
We made it 3 years into our marriage...
and then an oops.
At the time, James was working Valet with a guy
whose mom was a midwife,
and we happened to be going to a ward where there
were 5 or 6 womenwho were pro-home birthing.
So, it seemed like a good alternative since
we didn't think we could afford to pay cash at a hospital.
And the homebirthing women I talked to
made birth sound so glorious.
I was hoping to actually do a waterbirth, but it didn't pan out.
So...below is a picture of our midwife- Margie Dacko.
That bed that she is sitting on...that is her exam "table"
for those monthly, then weekly appointments.
Another thing about Margie...she has fake nails, acrylics...
imagine that during a dilation/cervix check...totally not cool.

She was very nice and motherly. I really did grow to love her.
I woke up the morning of Sept 29, 2004 at 6:45am
with really bad menstrual cramping.
Which obviously turned out to be contractions,
they started out like 10 minutes apart
when they grew closer to 5 minutes, we called Margie...
she came, checked me, then sat and waited while I went thru
the "birthing process". At around 4pm,
I started to get ready to push.
She reached in there with those gloved acrylic nails
and broke my water!
2 hrs? of pushing later....it's really foggy now...
I had a beautiful baby girl.
So, all in all, it wasn't THAT bad of an experience,
just painful and long,
ended up being in all natural labor for 13 hours....
I'm sure there are worse stories.
In the picture below, you can
see Margie checking the baby after birth...s
he does an Apgar score and checks
weight, the heart, etc.....everything a nursery would do.
But to those of you with BIRTHS in your near future (JEN)
I urge you to make that anesthesiologist your buddy :).

Sarah, just tell your sister that an epidural is your friend!! I can't imagine going that long without pain relief. You are a stronger woman than I am.

You are my hero! Coming from someone who has had 2 children and not one contraction, I think it is so great that you can say you did this. I would've at least liked to try without, even though I know I never would've made it...hence the reason I have never had contractions...someone up there loves me too much!

I pray that the epidural is my friend! :) Sarah.. I remember stories like asking mom "Why didn't you tell me it would hurt this much!?" Or something like that.. Don't worry it didn't freak me out.. I just want this little guy out!! Is his lungs really still forming 5 weeks before my due date?

Wow! I had to wait for my epidural because I thought I could be strong and handle the contractions after they broke my water and by the time I realized how bad they were getting there were 3 other women in line infront of me getting their epidurals first! AWFUL! Gotta give you credit, Sarah! I could never do it!

I thought the home birth went pretty well. all in all I would say it was easier than the hospital. I had to sleep on the worst bed in the world at the hospital. Stop being so dramatic, Sarah! ;-) And I why do I post to my blog if you don't comment on it? You know the world revolves around me on Thursdays!

Of course you would think it was easier at home, James!! You weren't the one giving birth!! ;) LOL!! I think it matters more if the mom can get some pain relief versus the dad getting a comfy bed!! I'm certainly not going to worry if Trav is in a comfy bed in a couple of weeks. I'm going to worry about getting my epidural as soon as possible!!!

I knew someone would bite on that comment. Nice to hear from you Krista. Just remember that drugs are bad, mmmkay?

Not the epidural!!! That is very, very gooooood!!! It's nice to hear from you too James. You always remind me of my hubby's humor. We miss you guys!!!

I still think it's awesome that you had a natural birth. For as long as I can remember, I have said that I will have my kids naturally someday, too. Nothing has changed my mind. I'm currently doing my clinical rotations in OB/peds right now and seeing what I see everyday has only made me want to go drug-free even more - even my patients in pain can't convince me. :)

You are an inspiration!
