This totally happens to us 7/10 times we eat out. And we eat out alot, many different restaurants on many different occasions (mostly b/c I hate to cook Ü). So, we see our share of waiters.
Yesterday, we went to Chili's for lunch....I had me a craving for Big Mouth Bites, yum. We get seated, the waiter makes his first appearance...we get our drinks in a timely manner...we get our chips & salsa quickly (very importante). Then he disappears. For at least 1/2 hour. We got lucky, the lady at the next table was getting a bit ticked and went and found a manager. She brought our food out in the next 2 minutes. Hmmm....
So...the question is....WHERE DO THEY GO? I've seen the movie "Waiting" and my imagination sure can go wild. If he isn't helping us, and he's not helping any of his other tables...where'd he go?
I know being a waiter has got to be challenging...its not a job I've ever done or ever plan on doing. But I'd really like to know...where did he go?
The girls got a little antsy, since it was a late lunch anyways....so we amused ourselves with a little music. Bella is a fan of Death Cab for Cutie, of all things...girl's got good taste ;). Aube just kept asking for Mamma Mia.

My vote is that they are 1). taking smoking breaks or 2). just hanging out with their co-workers. Whatever they are doing, it's annoying!
My dad is part owner of a restaurant (Yay! Free, yummy food for us!). You can see all the way into the kitchen, and all of the soda machines are in the dining room, so you totally know what all the wait staff is doing! I love it. We usually have our food at our table within 15 - 20 minutes of actually walking through the door. We're always leaving withing 45 minutes to an hour after arriving.
Their staff is awesome!
I loooooove Death Cab for Cutie.
The waiters - man, I swear they are either on a dirty phone call, making out in the back, or playing games on their phones or something.
We must get the same waiters . . .
We just did our tax return this past weekend – and looked at how much money we spent last year (kinda backward budgeting . . . ). Anyway, we spent over $6k on eating out! Holy cow!!! (You’d think we’d vow to cut back – but no. Good thing they charge sales tax – adds to our sales tax credit!)
Cheree...James did that same thing, but he kept the info to himself...all I know is that its TOO MUCH. haha.
I hate when we get waiters like that. We are always in a hurry with Aileen...so that she won't make too big of a scene and we always have to hunt them down for the check! Crazy!
I also think Death Cab for Cutie is amazing.
As someone who used to wait tables... if your waiter dissapears it is one of two things. 1.) They are supser busy and making salads and drinks etc for all of their other tables, or 2.) they are doing something else like smoking or chatting or eating and will still expect you to be patient and leave a big tip. Those are the yahoos that ruin it for the rest!
Sweet! I was HOPING I knew a veteran waitress! And I will keep thinking #1 in my head for this waiter from Saturday...cause he seemed just so nice, like a big ole teddy bear!
Bad waiters suck! It makes me so mad!! And, I would probably die if I knew what we spent eating out. This big butt came from eating out and I paid for it...
I hate it when the waiters walk right by you (knowing that you want the check) but don't look at you! Grrr.
We didn't spend quite as much as Cheree did last year, but if we keep up the pace we set in December and January we'll pass that mark this year. Not good.
The Machine?! Seriously?! LOL.
December and January were pretty bad...but that was mainly my fault. My abhorrence for cooking peaked over the last 2 months.
We always get 50/50 on waiters. Some good, some highly questionable. Steve used to be a waiter, so he is more than sympathetic, but every now and then.....all I can say is I hope they don't spit in my food.
oops...that's my other log-in that I used to talk trash on the Utah Jazz blog. Sasha Vujacic on the Lakers is who "the machine" is.
Your "other life". Uh huh.
On Second Life I'm an accountant and have a wife and two daughters. And I can fly.
As another former waitress I second Jenni on the waiter either being super busy or lazy. Sadly, as a customer, sometimes it's hard to know which. I try to give my servers the benefit of the doubt, especially if the restaurant is busy. I'm a little less sympathetic if I'm the only table they have.
I hate bad waiters. We are so cheap that I don't think most waiters like to wait on us anyway, but when they are not good waiters, they really hate us! Oh and I love chips and salsa from Chilis, one of my cravings with Kayley's pregnancy and one of my downfalls at any Mexican restaurant!
