The little things...

...are what make me the happiest. Especially when they act like this, when I'm not feeling so hot.
*And to clarify (for James) they are reading stories to their dogs, who are napping. ;)

I can't believe I haven't blogged for 5 days...the time has just flown by. I do have a lot to post, my apologies to family for the lack of updates. We are doing good, and in a nutshell...James and I had a blast at the XTO Christmas party on Friday night, we had a low-key weekend and I fell in love with the soup at Chili's, Sunday made me glad that we go back to 9am church next year...the day goes by too fast with afternoon church! And right now, I should be in Houston, with Jenny (sob) but I didn't want to make another preggo sick. So...we are hanging out, getting Christmas gifts made and done (thank goodness...). I'm actually glad this is happening now, and not next week when we go to Minnesota! I hate being sick on Christmas!

Prevention Tips.

With the H1N1 flu scare, I've been looking for ways to "naturally" help my family fight it off. Obviously, modern medicine is around for a reason...but I feel like the natural and herbal side added to it can only keep us on the right path.

Which is why I was so ecstatic to get an email from a friend in Primary with this helpful advice:
The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
#1. Frequent hand washing (who else's hands are raw from washing so much, lol...I was gifted the pumpkin scent from Bath & Body Works...totally makes me want to eat my hands, so worth the constant hand washing to smell that!).
#2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
#3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
# 4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once everyday with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti ( "Neti pots" or very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with Q-tips dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
#5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
#6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, HOT CHOCOLATE, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm. (You could also do like James' Aunt Becky and drink hot water...her way of not drinking hot tea, lol.)
This information is from Dr. Vinay Goyal is an MBBS,DRM,DNB (Intensivist and Thyroid specialist) having clinical experience of over 20 years. He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Cent re, Malad (W).
Obviously....this is taken from an email, and you never know about the information that is sent (unless you check Snopes.com religiously). And obviously, I'm not a nurse...we aren't allowed to give medical advice in the massage therapy field Ü. But logically, all those suggestions make sense, especially the "clearing out of the nose"...I was spray painting with black this past weekend and sneezed later on that day and my booegers were BLACK...I don't really want to know whats stuck in my nose!! Hopefully little tidbits like these can keep us a little less sick this season.

Morbid x 10.

The following conversation took place between 1:45pm and 1:46pm on Sunday. I was lying helplessly in bed, in the throes of sickness...James was getting ready to take the girls to church.

Me: 'What if I die before you get back'. Yes, I know, morbid. But don't you wonder sometimes?
James: 'In what terms are we talking?'
Me: 'I dunno know, but seriously, what would you do?'
James: 'I'd drain the pool, throw you in and bury you, then plant a nice garden on top.' And you know he had a smile on his face when he said that.
Me: 'Pshaw, you know thorn bushes would grow there, not flowers.' Cause that's what he deserves for burying me in the backyard.

In which I set myself up, because he just smiles and finishes tying his tie. Punk.

We celebrate our (what year is it?) ummm...8th anniversary in less than a month. Yay for me.

Media rollercoaster....

Who is freaked out by swine flu? I know I'm raising my hand. Anything that states pandemic has visions of movies such as The Andromeda Strain, Children of Men or Blindness running thru my head. But I try to keep my freakout at bay, which is not easy...especially since we were so recently in Mexico....I don't want to not live my life because of being afraid, it's not fair to myself or my family. Just like when I heard about SARS or bird flu, and everything else the media blows out of proportion. What is a life lived scared? We know that things are going to get worse before they get better anyways...so we just be prepared in every way we can, right?

Which is why I had to laugh when I read this article, specifically this part:

The swine flu outbreak that has alarmed the world for a week now appears less ominous, with the virus showing little staying power in the hardest-hit cities and scientists suggesting it lacks the genetic fortitude of past killer bugs.
President Barack Obama even voiced hope Friday that it may turn out to be no more harmful than the average seasonal flu.

A flu expert said he sees no reason to believe the virus is particularly lethal. And a federal scientist said the germ's genetic makeup lacks some traits seen in the deadly 1918 flu
pandemic strain and the more recent killer bird flu.

Towards the end of the article, it's brought up that the average number of people who die from the regular seasonal flu is 30, 000 in the US. That's the REGULAR flu...not even a super-killer pig flu (did you know there is also a canine flu out there, too....haha).

I think the media has been watching too many scary movies. Or they are bored. Or they think people in surgical masks are hot.

And for the record...our little fam is just fine...no sickies, not even a cough! Hoping to keep it that way. Ü

Packing is such a pain in the rear.

I'm sure everyone knows this...especially those that travel with small children. I thought that it would get easier over time...we travel A LOT...more than the norm. But it just doesn't. The worst thing when packing for a trip that includes anyone but yourself is that you just don't know what to expect! Which is why I pack EVERYTHING. Ugh. So annoying.

I've limited myself to 2 big suitcases, one for the girls and one for me & the extra stuff...plus one smaller suitcase for James (since he has "proclaimed" that he would pack his own stuff this trip...to show me I don't have to bring so much crap...I dunno. It's annoying tho...we leave in 2 days and he hasn't packed a thing, but I have! sneaky, sneaky...slowly but surely).

I've been told what the hotel offers, so I can know what to leave home. I've also been told that we'll be in bathing suits all day, so other clothes really aren't needed. But can I bring just a few sets of clothes? NO! Each one of us has a set of clothes for each day. JUST. IN. CASE. I'm a freak, I can't help it. For the last 2 days, I've been sifting thru the days worth of clothes trying and TRYING to leave things out.

And...the girls are sick, YAY! Bleh. Mostly sniffles with a bit of a fever. I'm hoping enough rest and chicken noodle soup over the 24 hours will coax them into better health! Bella is the epitomy of pathetic tonight, as she lays on the couch muttering "I'm sick".

Playing catchup. Or as Aube would say "playing bipit"....

It's fantastic....almost everyone on BOTH sides of our families have started blogs! The newest addition...Kari & Matt, James' youngest sister. We miss our Tia! She lived with us for a few months when she first moved to Vegas, and it was a blast ;). Of course, she did have to share a room with Baby Bella, which I'm sure was a joy!

Anyways...I've been meaning to post some pictures from Friday night....the game was so much fun! Love me some basketball! Was it worth staying up all night working and getting a sweet little chest cold? Not so much. Buuuut, it was enjoyable...good seats (wonderful seats), good food and good chit-chatting with James' boss and his wife. I'm always disappointed that we never sit in the "free tshirt section" you know...where they shoot or throw tshirts. I mean, we were in a suite, so it was awesome...with food and soda's, etc...but dang it! I want a free tshirt! But I guess, maybe the "Platinum Club" is expected to not want free tshirts? lol.

So, it's been a decent weekend....besides this whole chest cold, cough thing.
Pictures to come....

Spots!

It seems as if ear infections are
all the rage this year...
On Monday we went to the doctor
to have her check Bella for allergies...she had
been getting really stuffy and sniffly at night
for about a month now, and here & there
she had been complaining about an earache.
After a quick check-up, it was concluded
that Bella did have ear infection....
The doctor quickly prescribed the antibiotic,
Amoxicillin, which just happened to do this
to my dear Bella in November 2005:

A tub full of oatmeal to fight off the itchies:

So....of course, I was a bit wary when she handed
me the prescription paper.
But I guess, this reaction she had in '05 was just
an "irritation rash" and that if she happens to start
getting hives, the stop the treatment immediately.
So far, so good...no crazy rash after a week.
